Compassionate care. Shorter wait times. Experienced, knowledgeable
personnel. Expect all of this and more at the CRMC Emergency
Room (ER). What makes our ER so special? Let us show you.
1. Getting Bigger to Serve You Better
We're growing with you. We just
finished a two-year expansion project,
and our "new" ER has 19 beds -- an increase
of five beds. It features frontline technology,
a more convenient nursing station and a
bright, modern décor.
"We see more than 42,500 patients a year,"
says Michael Bear, MD, FACEP, a board-certified
emergency medicine physician and
Medical Director of Emergency Services at
CRMC. "The expansion means we can provide high-quality and prompt care
to even more patients in spacious, comfortable and attractive surroundings."
2. Great Staff, Great Care
A high-quality medical team is at the heart of any successful hospital.
CRMC is no exception. You can be confident knowing that the
doctors, physician assistants (PAs) and nurses who staff our ER are chosen
based on rigorous criteria. The ER doctors
are board-certified in emergency medicine,
while the nurses and PAs are all trained in
emergency medicine.
"We've got a phenomenal team here at
CRMC," says Keith McCarty, MD, FACEP,
Assistant Medical Director of Emergency
Services. "We all work together effectively
and thoughtfully to give patients the right
care at the right time."
"We also have close working relationships
with the other physicians here. This helps
simplify the process when patients need
specialty or inpatient care," Dr. Bear adds.
Many ER staff members are bilingual
or have learned Spanish to better meet our
patients' needs.
3. Rapid Response,
Streamlined Service
"We don't wait until you're in an ER
bed to start caring for you. In fact, more than
half of our patients never need ER beds,"
Dr. Bear says. That's because of the innovative
Rapid Medical Evaluation® (RME) program,
developed by CEP America.
We'll assess you in a designated RME
area, just after you enter the ER. If you have a
less urgent problem, you might receive all the
care you need without being sent to a bed.
This often means you'll be discharged from
the hospital faster, too.
"The program has cut waiting times, and
it really boosts efficiency," Dr. McCarty says.
"You often can get the care you need without
having to wait long."
If you require an ER bed due to a serious
condition, you'll be assigned one.
4. Quality Outcomes
At CRMC, you can be confident that
you're receiving exceptional care. Our
ER gets high marks on efficiency, treatment
guidelines and patient satisfaction ratings.
Examples include:
- The ER's door-to-provider time (the
number of minutes that elapse from
the time patients arrive until they see a
caregiver) averages 29 minutes, faster
than most hospitals across the nation.
- The ER's compliance with national
core measures for serious conditions,
like heart attacks and pneumonia, has
been 100 percent over recent months.
Compliance with these measures shows
how well hospitals follow national
guidelines for treating these common
and serious conditions.
- Patients are consistently very satisfied
with the care at our ER, surveys show.

Meet Our Physician
Assistants!
If you come to our ER, you may be
treated by one of CRMC's friendly
physician assistants (PAs). These
highly trained medical professionals
perform many services usually
provided by doctors. PAs can take
your medical history, make
diagnoses, develop treatment plans
and even prescribe medications.
"Our PAs all have extensive
experience in emergency medicine,
and members of the community
are extremely happy with their
care," says Michael Bear, MD, FACEP,
Medical Director of Emergency
Services. "Some people even
specifically request them!"
PAs also can:
- Repair certain wounds
- Treat joint injuries and fractures
- Order and interpret X-rays, lab
work and other diagnostic tests
- Counsel patients on preventive
care
"We have 17 PAs working in our
ER, and their professionalism and
medical expertise continues to
impress me," says Keith McCarty, MD,
FACEP, Assistant Medical Director of
Emergency Services. "They know
when to get the doctors involved, but
it's not always necessary when
treating some patients."
